David Iglesias

David Iglesias can handle the truth.

In 2006, Iglesias was one of eight U.S. Attorneys fired by the Bush Administration for "performance-related issues." Iglesias, who was serving his fifth year as a U.S. Attorney, insisted his dismissal was politically motivated. The 51-year-old Panamanian-American became one of the central figures in a political scandal that implicates former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Vice President Dick Cheney and Presidential advisor Karl Rove.

Iglesias, a lifelong Republican, believes that he was dismissed for refusing to prosecute sketchy voter fraud cases against Democrats in a possible attempt to suppress minority votes in swings states. He also testified before Congress that elected Republican officials pressured him to file charges against a Democratic politician before a pivotal election: "I felt leaned on."

Although criminal investigations into the firings are ongoing, the Department of Justice released a report late last year confirming that Iglesias' dismissal was indeed politically motivated. For Iglesias, the entire experience left him disillusioned: "I thought I was working with the Jedi Knights, and I was working for the Sith Lords."

A day after President Barack Obama's inauguration, Iglesias was appointed to prosecute terrorism cases out of Guantanamo Bay. It's an especially ironic assignment for Iglesias who was the inspiration for the JAG lawyer played by Tom Cruise in the movie A Few Good Men set in Guantanamo Bay.
