David Guetta

French DJ David Guetta in an unbuttoned white shirt and jeans.

The biggest song of the year was brought to you by a 41-year-old French guy.

David Guetta is the man behind I Gotta Feeling, the Black Eyed Peas smash that has been heard on everything from the Oprah Winfrey show to UFC ring entrances. In the U.S., Guetta may never match the stardom he enjoys in Europe (where dance music is as big as pop), but that's not stopping him from trying.

Born to Moroccan parents in Paris, France, Guetta has been a DJ since he was 13 years old. By his 18th birthday, he had already established himself as a regular in Paris' house scene. Guetta spent the '90s promoting and performing in huge parties in France and Spain until he dropped his breakthrough debut, Just a Little More Love, in 2002. His next two albums, Guetta Blaster and Pop Life, became massive hits in Europe on the strength of tracks like Love Don't Let Me Go and The World Is Mine.

With his sights set on the U.S., Guetta has rounded up a who's who of guest stars for his latest, One Love, feeding America's growing taste for house music with When Love Takes Over a thumping love ballad featuring Kelly Rowland. The album, which features appearances by Ne-Yo, Estelle, Kid Cudi and will.i.am, has a clear breakthrough hit: Sexy Chick, a traditional Akon song – on steroids.

The album reflects his real-life philosophy: "The magic of the nightlife [is to] bring together people who would never meet. Young, talented, rich and poor, black and white, gay and straight."

Naya Rivera

"Glee" actress Naya Rivera holds her hands in her hair.

Naya Rivera says she's good at everything. Seriously?

While most kids were getting ready for kindergarten, the California native was starring alongside comedy legend Redd Foxx and future star Larenz Tate in the TV sitcom The Royal Family. Produced by Eddie Murphy, the show was gaining popularity until tragedy struck: only a few episodes into the show's first season, Foxx died of a heart attack. The series was eventually canceled. Rivera recovered and continued to grow up on the small screen, earning guest roles on popular sitcoms like Family Matters, Smart Guy and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Once Rivera hit her teens, roles started drying up. "It was a bit hard to transition from a kid to a working adult just because it's so much easier to book jobs when you're cute and five," explains the Puerto Rican, German and African-American actress. As she searched for new roles, Rivera dabbled in music, a move that would pay off years later. Now 22, the flirtatious Rivera is combining her acting and singing talents on the TV show Glee, a hit comedy about a school choir that is part Mean Girls and part High School Musical.

Despite her confidence, Rivera, who plays the feisty cheerleader Santana Lopez on "Glee," reveals there's one thing she isn't good at: "Sports."

Carlos y Alejandra

Urban bachata duo Carlos y Alejandra pose in front of a wooden door.

Carlos y Alejandra may be on an impossible mission: to take bachata to "every corner of the world." They're off to a good start.

The Boston-based Carlos Vargas Franco, Jr. (24) and Bianca Alejandra Felíz (22) have already visited the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and México, spreading the word and music of bachata with hits like Explicame and Perdóname. Not bad, considering the Dominican-American Carlos and the Dominican-Puerto Rican Alejandra have only been performing together for three years.

Before they were paired together by their record label Romance Records in 2006, Carlos was just another kid from the Bronx who fell in love with music after getting a guiro for his 10th birthday. Alejandra, a former beauty queen and TV host, has been singing since her quinceañera.

The release of their debut, La Introduccíon, has brought out the inevitable comparisons to the more urban Aventura as well as the more traditional Monchy y Alexandra. They've also been the subject of much gossip. Carlos was rumored as the top choice to take over for Aventura frontman Anthony "Romeo" Santos. "It's an honor but we want to make it clear that we have our own style," says Franco.

Carlos y Alejandra's latest single, Cuanto Duele is currently on heavy rotation on mun2.

Paula Garces in a black top and jeans.

Paula Garcés says she's a geek. The Colombian-born, New York-bred actress, best known as dream girl Maria in the Harold & Kumar movies, thinks she's too much of a goofball to be considered "hot." Too late.

After kicking off her career in the early '90s on the TV shows New York Undercover, Oz and Guiding Light, Garcés snagged a starring role as Francesca in the 2002 teen film Clockstoppers. By the end of that same year, the then-28-year-old was named one of Maxim magazine’s "Hot 100 Women of the Year," along with Beyonce, Jessica Alba and Shakira.

A former personal trainer who briefly attempted professional kickboxing, Garcés soon picked recurring roles on Law & Order and CSI: Miami. For much of her career, the bubbly Latina has stepped into the shoes of younger characters. "I feel like I have an advantage since I look young, and I can bring a lot of insight into the roles that a girl that age might not be able to," explains Garcés. Most recently, she spent three seasons playing rookie officer Tina Hanlon on the popular police drama The Shield. A successful working mom, Garcés is trading in her badge and gun for high heels and designer clothes as the co-creator, host and executive producer of the new mun2 series "The mun2 Look."

Sergio Vega

Banda singer Sergio Vega in a black hat and black suit.

Sergio Vega says he knows what it's like to die.

In the late '90s, the up-and-coming banda singer was on the losing end of a battle with drugs and alcohol. After being hospitalized for his addiction, Vega disappeared from the regional Mexican scene for the next five years. To many, it appeared Vega had thrown away a promising career that could only be described as a rags-to-riches story.

Nicknamed "El Shaka" (after the African warrior Shaka Zulu), Vega was only 19 years old when he crossed the U.S.-México border to join his brothers in Arizona. During the day, the siblings worked in construction. By night, Los Hermanos Vega performed Norteño classics in local bars. In the early '90s, the mustached Vega parted ways with his brother and started his own group, Sergio Vega y Sus Shaka's Del Norte, before embarking on a solo career that would eventually stall.

After hitting rock bottom, Vega returned to music a changed man: "I think God took me [from death] and returned me to Earth to keep on going. Now I see things differently – I pay more attention to my work, family and friends." The change paid off. A rejuvenated Vega went on to release the biggest hits of his career, songs like Dueño De Tí, Cuanto Te Lavas La Cara and Necesito Dueña.

His latest release, ¿Quién Es Usted? (Who are you?), features Vega's bread and butter: love songs sung straight from the heart.

Jay Sean

British R&B singer Jay Sean in a dark suit.

The best Akon song on the radio these days? It's Down by Jay Sean.

The British singer's single has all the makings of a Konvict Music hit: a sweet hook, Euro-house backing track and, of course, it's club-ready – just add cocktails. Like Kevin Rudolf and Drake, Jay Sean can thank Lil Wayne and Cash Money Records for introducing him to America.

Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in London, Jay Sean has been a star in his native country since 2004, when he bagged three hit singles by the end of that same year. The U.K.'s now-defunct Touch Magazine once proclaimed that Jay Sean was the "UK's answer to Ne-Yo." Despite his success across the pond, many Brits questioned why an Indian kid with a British accent was singing R&B. Jay Sean, who dropped out of medical school to pursue music, says it's simple: "It's obvious I'm not black, but it doesn't matter, it's black music and I love it, I've grown up on it."

The first British-Asian singer to sign with an American label, Jay Sean will release a revamped version of his 2008 album, My Own Way, later this year. Titled All or Nothing, the record will feature appearances by fellow Cash Money millionaires Birdman, Kevin Rudolf and Drake.

Demi Lovato

whodat

thu 7/30/2009

Singer and actress Demi Lovato sits on a couch.

Demi Lovato isn't an actress. She just plays one on TV.

Although the 16-year-old stars in Disney's Sonny With A Chance and appeared in Camp Rock, Lovato maintains acting is "like a hobby." And with good reason: the singer-songwriter made her musical breakthrough last year with Don't Forget, an album packed with bubblegum pop-rock like La La Land and Get Back (both co-written by Jonas Brothers). Critics compared the young Mexican-American to tween superstar Miley Cyrus and the Jonases. The album climbed as high as number two on the Billboard chart.

Lovato, who plays both piano and guitar, is once again being compared to Cyrus on her latest, Here We Go Again. Released earlier this month, the album has already spawned two hits: the Jonas Brothers-meets-Paramore title track and the delicate ballad Catch Me, a wistful song that hints the cute brunette would much rather be the next Kelly Clarkson than the next Hannah Montana. Lovato says her grown-up sound – she collaborated with John Mayer on one track – is just a reflection of real life: "I’ve just become a happier person over the last few months, because my life has hit this place where it’s very comfortable."

Tempo

whodat

thu 7/23/2009

Puerto Rican reggaetonero and rapper Tempo, who is currently incarcerated.

Tempo could have become reggaetón's biggest star. Now he's in prison.

Born David Sánchez Badillo in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Tempo was a kid from the projects who got hooked on music at an early age. When he was four years old, Tempo's parents divorced, and he spent the next decade traveling between New York and Puerto Rico. During his time in la Isla, he studied at his town's public school of music. In New York, he fell in love with hip hop. By his 18th birthday, Tempo was kicking off his rap career from Orlando, Florida, combining the gritty hip hop he'd heard playing on the streets of NYC with Puerto Rican reggaetón.

In the '90s, the green-eyed rapper hooked up with DJ Playero, one of the producers credited with pulling reggaetón out from the underground. Their work led to Tempo's first two albums of street-wise gangsta rap, Game Over and New Game, both of which went gold in Puerto Rico. By 2000, he was battling with Daddy Yankee for the top spot in the game. But his rise would soon come to an abrupt halt.

In 2002, Tempo and his producer, Buda, were arrested for alleged possession of 30 kilos (66 lbs) of heroin and charged with the intent to sell. The husky MC maintained his innocence, blaming law enforcement officials for being unable to capture "real drug dealers." No drugs were seized at the time of the arrest. The prosecution then used lyrics from his songs, including Narco Hampon, as evidence against him:

Soy un Narcohampon tengo el control del area azul
traficante de kilates pero cantante tu?

Three years later, Tempo was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison. Buda, who passed away in 2007, was acquitted. While Tempo's lawyers appealed the conviction, he found support in the unlikeliest of allies: Daddy Yankee. Once his biggest rival, El Cangri joined forces with fellow reggaetón stars Tego Calderón and Hector "El Father" to promote the Free Tempo campaign. Some accuse Daddy Yankee of supporting the jailed rapper for publicity, but Tempo disagrees: "What does Daddy Yankee gain [out of this] if he has everything? Fame, fortune, money… he's at the peak of his career."

Last month, Tempo dropped Free Tempo, a new album featuring a who's who of reggaetón: Daddy Yankee, Wisin y Yandel, Jowell y Randy, Arcángel, Tego Calderón, Zion, Fat Joe, Hector "El Father" and Yomo.
