R&B crooner Ne-Yo follows his breakthrough debut with Because Of You. Billboard.com loves the album's unpredictability, but the Los Angeles Times finds it “too formulaic to be truly addictive.” Slant Magazine laments that “nothing here matches the smooth pop” of Ne-Yo's earlier hits.
Lumidee tries to shake off the one-hit wonder stigma with her new album Unexpected. The Associated Press deadpans “If audiences don’t know who this Spanish Harlemite is by now, then they’ll be none-the-wiser from her second attempt.” British blog Da Mans Dem agrees: “[W]hile Lumidee has found some success in Europe, for the rest of the world she will fall back into obscurity.”
Tori Amos' ninth studio release is another ambitious 23-track concept album titled American Doll Posse. The Guardian speculates it could have been “one of her most significant records,” if Amos had kept the album at 10 tracks. Despite being a "conceptual wreck," Entertainment Weekly recognizes the album "benefits from some of the beefiest, most borderline-glam-rock moments Amos has put on record.”
Canadian singer-songwriter Feist gets an impressive 8.8 from Pitchforkmedia for elevating herself "above countless other diary-keeping tunesmiths" on her third album, The Reminder, with "a voice that could make even Dick Cheney weep." The Austin Chronicle admits it succeeds in “mixing soft rock, indie rock, jazz, and soul," but the album “is neither miserable nor memorable.”
Japanese sound scientist Cornelius releases his new album, Sensuous, in the U.S. Rolling Stone enjoys the weird "blips, glitches, warm acoustic instruments" and "snatches of melody," but Stylus Magazine contends that Sensuous is "a little disjointed, more enigmatic, and more confounding than its predecessors.”
