Jennifer Lopez delivers Brave, her second album of the year. Slant magazine calls Brave a "convincing but disheartening approximation of old school fun [that] becomes a predictable series of mid-tempo numbers." The UK's Times Online is also disappointed with J-Lo's return to the dancefloor: "American R&B sure churns out some formulaic rubbish." That's British for "trash."
Soulja Boy releases his debut album, SoulaBoyTellEm.com, "14 tracks of raps so vapid even Soulja Boy has to admit how worthless they are,” says online rater Rap Reviews. Media heavyweight the Associated Press describes it as a collection of "rudimentary rhymes, infectious hooks and space-age, synth-heavy beats" that is as "formulaic and ultimately disposable as hip-hop can get."
R&B singer Jill Scott is back with her fifth album, The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3. The Philly-bred Scott “cares about words,” but “as with so many new R&B heroes, [her] music is more about groove and mood than song,” shrugs Rolling Stone. Blogger Studio Couture observes that the album “ is more like a timepiece than a musical journey or progression.”
Generic alt-rockers Matchbox Twenty are back with a "greatest hits" package titled Exile on Mainstream. The album's six new tracks "move ably between jittery power pop, country, even a little blue-eyed soul" concedes Blender magazine. Britain's New Musical Express unloads on the Florida-based alt-rockers: [T]he only pertinent questions this retrospective collection raises... why you'd need to write six new tunes for a 'Greatest Hits' unless the rest of your previous output was utter gash."
