Jay-Z's American Gangster, a concept album inspired by the recent movie of the same name, is “deceptively one of his best and most personal,” according to Allhiphop.com. The BBC says Jigga's tenth studio album stands up well: “[H]is collaborators’ re-invention of funk-soul and Jay-Z’s charismatic rapping make ideal bed fellows.”
Los Extraterrestres, the heavily-anticipated record by reggaetón duo Wisin & Yandel, “will be a success thanks to W&Y's formidable ability to fuse rhythms without ever sounding contrived,” predicts Billboard.com
Chris Brown's sophomore effort, Exclusive, gets a respectable "B-" from Entertainment Weekly which goes on to lament: "Brown's adolescent voice and playful scatting — while cute — are steamrolled by pushy collaborators.” Rolling Stone is smitten, declaring Exclusive an "all-grown-up album on a level with Justin Timberlake's Justified, Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad or even Bobby Brown's King of Stage.”
System Of A Down lead singer Serj Tankian releases his solo debut, Elect The Dead. The Onion's A.V. Club guesses it's "what SOAD might sound like if Tankian—as comfy on piano and guitar as he is growling and trilling in front of a mic—had complete creative control.” “Blending stentorian melodrama with moments of exquisite delicacy”, writes U.K.'s The Guardian, “Tankian's songwriting is nobody's blunt instrument.” Stentorian?
