The U.S. Senate has approved "historic" anti-smoking legislation that gives the federal government power to regulate how tobacco companies market their products and what they put in them.

For the first time in history, the percentage of U.S. adults who smoke is under 20 percent, according to the CDC. Nearly half a million people die each year due to the effects of smoking.

Tobacco use could kill one billion people worldwide by the year 2100, according to a report by the World Health Organization. Only 100 million died from tobacco use in the 20th century.
