Fernando Bermudez, a 40-year-old man from New York, has been declared innocent of the murder for which he was convicted 18 years ago. Bermudez, who has been in prison since the age of 22, will still face over two years in jail for a drug charge.

The state of New York is easing its drug laws by moving away from mandatory minimum prison sentences and allowing judges to sentence first-time nonviolent offenders to treatment programs instead. Over the long term, sending drug offenders to treatment is believed to be less expensive than keeping them in jail.
