  • The Kumbia Kings vs. Kumbia AllStarz drama continues as Cruz Martinez’ Los Súper Reyes release their debut album, El Regreso De Los Reyes. Mexican newspaper El Porvenir describes the album as a “fusion of American urban music and popular Latino sounds,” while Billboard.com highlights that El Regreso's vibe “remains linked to the Kumbia Kings," so "those looking for a clear departure or a brand-new sound aren't going to find it here."
  • Kala, the long-awaited follow up to M.I.A.’s debut, comes out today. Slant Magazine calls M.I.A. the “truest 'outsider' to emerge on the pop landscape in ages” but is dissatisfied with the lack of “beats that actually make people want to get up and move.” Rolling Stone lavishes the album with 4.5 out of 5 stars, describing Kala as “an unexpectedly sure-footed follow-up to a brainy beat-adept's can-you-top-this debut.” Lots of hyphens there.
  • Hip Hop and funk collective Galactic release their fifth studio album, From the Corner to the Block. The five-man New Orleans jam band is joined by a star-studded cast of underground MC’s: Lyrics Born, Mr. Lif and Chali 2na. Without the guests, “Galactic doesn’t have much to offer beyond head-nodding grooves,” laments Variety. The Village Voice generally agrees: "[T]he band doesn’t always find the right fit with its guest-rappers,” but “a lot of interesting things happen, and some of them are even great.”
  • Dutch party music duo Junior Senior serves up “pop music with a capital 'P'" on their long-delayed second album, Hey Hey My My Yo Yo and it's "worth the wait," according to Popmatters. “Junior Senior is a half-straight, half-gay, happy-go-lucky duo worth sincere admiration,” gushes The Onion’s A.V. Club.
  • Canadian indie rockers The New Pornographers return with their fourth proper full-length, Challengers, a mellow album that “at times drifts dangerously close to the dreaded adult contemporary of your local Gap store,” chides Filter Magazine. But England’s New Musical Express is convinced that Challengers “is a staggering masterclass in indie-pop songwriting that will make your brain melt and send firecrackers around your heart.”
