The U.S. Government Accountability Office says law enforcement agencies are failing to curb gun-smuggling from the U.S. to México because they aren't working together: "The agencies lack clear roles and responsibilities and have been operating under an outdated inter-agency agreement."

One day after admitting U.S. consumers and gun laws are partly to blame for drug trafficking violence in México, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she is considering a ban on military-style assault weapons in the U.S.: "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

As part of a $700 million plan to help México combat drug trafficking, the White House will send 500 law enforcement agents to the U.S.-México border. Among those being dispatched are Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agents who will help curb the illegal flow of guns from the U.S. into Mexico.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will meet with their Mexican counterparts Eduardo Medina and Fernando Francisco Gomez Mont next month to discuss strategies to curb gun trafficking from the U.S. to México.

Duranguense star Diana Reyes says she was forced to abandon a concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana because her life was threatened by the venue owner: "He was saying he was going to cut off our audio and threatened to get a gun and shoot me."

Gun sales are surging in Texas after President-elect Barack Obama's victory. Gun shop owner DeWayne Irwin: "People perceive him as a Democrat, a liberal. (They think) 'They're going to come get our guns.'"

Teachers working in Texas' Harrold school district will be allowed to carry concealed guns once they take part in crisis management training. Superintendent David Thweatt: "When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started."

Washington D.C. lawmakers are considering a bill that would require all police officers to have miniature video cameras installed in their guns. (via Gizmodo)

The Mexican army has seized guns from police departments in Nuevo Laredo and four other cities in the state of Tamaulipas. Previously: Rosarito and Tijuana.

U.S. Attorney General Mukasey announced a crackdown on the flow of illegal firearms across the border to Mexico. Firearms are prohibited in Mexico but not in the U.S.. Mexican drug cartels and, probably, American guns, are blamed for the violent deaths of 115 people in Mexico in just the first two weeks of this year.
