One day after admitting U.S. consumers and gun laws are partly to blame for drug trafficking violence in México, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she is considering a ban on military-style assault weapons in the U.S.: "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

As part of a $700 million plan to help México combat drug trafficking, the White House will send 500 law enforcement agents to the U.S.-México border. Among those being dispatched are Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agents who will help curb the illegal flow of guns from the U.S. into Mexico.

U.S. Attorney General Mukasey announced a crackdown on the flow of illegal firearms across the border to Mexico. Firearms are prohibited in Mexico but not in the U.S.. Mexican drug cartels and, probably, American guns, are blamed for the violent deaths of 115 people in Mexico in just the first two weeks of this year.
