A Louisiana justice of the peace has resigned weeks after he refused to marry a couple because the bride was white and the groom was black. The former justice, a white man named Keith Bardwell, said at the time he would usually recuse himself of performing marriages for mixed couples because it would "affect their kids." His decision was controversial.

Hate crimes against Latinos rose by almost 35% between 2003 and 2006, according to hate crime statistics published annually by the FBI. In California, the state with the largest Latino population in the U.S., hate crimes against Latinos almost doubled in the same period. (via Metafilter)
