One-third of all TV stations in the U.S. will switch over to a digital signal today and become unavailable to those without cable, satellites or a digital converter box. Although the digital TV transition was delayed from February 17 to June 12, TV stations that are ready to switch today will be allowed to do so.

A week after voting against delaying the digital TV transition scheduled later this month, the House of Representatives took another vote and decided to push back the transition until June 12. The vote is expected to be approved by President Obama.

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that will delay the digital TV conversion from February 17 to June 12. An estimated 6.5 million Americans are unprepared for the transition. Emergency responders will have to wait another four months before they can use the analog airwaves that would have been freed up by the move to digital.
