Guatemalan officials announced they have annulled 15 adoptions to the U.S. due to "irregularities," including fraud and kidnapping. They have reviewed 160 cases out of nearly 2,300 which were suspended earlier this year.

Guatemala has suspended the adoption of over 2,000 children to make sure they are being put up for adoption by their birth parents. Last year, 5,000 children were adopted from Guatemala, the majority by American parents.

Guatemalan lawmakers are changing previously lax adoption rules which led to a $100 million-a-year industry. According to estimates, one out of every 100 Guatemalan kids grow up as the adopted child of an American family.
