Casa De Leones

From Cream in the 60s to next year's CRS featuring Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Lupe Fiasco, supergroups, whatever their artistic merits, have tremendous commercial potential (see Power Station). With reggaetón now almost completely mainstream, the question isn't whether there will ever be a reggaetón supergroup – but when.

Enter Casa de Leones. Comprised of established players Jowell y Randy and newcomers J-King y Maximan and Guelo Star, Casa de Leones (house of lions) has already scored a hit with their first single, the thumping club anthem No Te Veo. Their self-titled debut, released in late June, took just two weeks to move into the middle of the pack on the Billboard 200 and number three on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart.

As their name quietly proclaims, Casa de Leones is the handiwork of Elias De Leon, founder of White Lion Records and the producer of such trend-setting reggaetón acts as Calle 13, Tego Calderón and Voltio. With the expert De Leon overseeing the mix, the four members of Casa de Leones say they're able to work in perfect harmony. And unlike the salsa-meets-reggaetón recording project Los Cocorocos – featuring Gilberto Santa Rosa, Don Omar, Tego Calderón and Domingo Quiñones – Casa de Leones plans to continue recording and touring, even as its individual members continue to release records of their own.
