This past Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted 46 to 53 in favor of "limiting debate" on President Bush' immigration reform bill, effectively postponing a decision until the Fall or even next year – right in the middle of the 2008 Presidential race. Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York said it was a "sad day for America." Republican Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina proclaimed: "The American people won today. They care enough for their country to get mad and to fight for it."
The contentious legislation, which could have given an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants a chance at permanent residency, fell short by 14 votes, prompting President Bush to lament: "The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find common ground. It didn't work." Supporters of the legislation were unable to convince its opponents that the bill did not provide "amnesty" for those breaking the law.
In its place, individual states will continue to pass laws, some quite harsh, to deal with the millions of illegal immigrants currently living and working in the U.S. – as well as their employers.

i defenetly don't agree with what the congress has done. i just don't understand what is so bad if 'illegal immigrants' want to become legal i don't see what is the down side to it...we all know that mexicanos or any immigrants in this country helps and makes this country up...this is what the US is all about is a huge melting pot that is what the US was created as, based as since the begining but just because we are not the same color it makes us outcast it isn't fair....i agree w/ what joE wrote now everyone is so worried w/ this whole immigration deal that everyone is forgetting that ppl are dying over seas....it is propaganda from the president b/c everyone wanted him out of office b/c he hasen't brought the troops back...it just not fair where is the JUSTICE FOR ALL???

well in my reasonable opinion i have to say that all the people against the immigrants should be the ones working in the fields and doing all that hardworking job. yeah i bet if they do go they wouldnt even last a day in there. And to all those minute men out there opposing like always and bit**** to get them back to mexico, wh do you even bother to get in this dont you realize that without the mexicans youre nothing and for some of you , see where your heritagae comes from cuz some of you complain about the mexicans and you guys are mas nopaludos que nada con la pencota de nopal en la frente.

It is sad that illegal immigrants aren't getting a fair shot at citizenship, it is also unfair that this bill doesn't allow a proper pathway for these illegal immigrants to become citizens and makes it virtually impossible for new immigrants to earn their citizenship. This was a Republican plan concocted by Bush and Karl Rove to win the Republicans some votes, but it still doesn't tackle the bigger issues (a workable naturalization process for current illegal immigrants and a proper way for their families to legally enter the U.S.) and it distracts voters from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't be fooled by Bush and his propaganda machine!!!
