Caitlin Sanchez of "Dora the Explorer"

let's talk

mon 3/2/2009

Something's different about "Dora the Explorer." It's her voice. Caitlin Sanchez, a 13-year-old from New Jersey, is the new actress behind the bilingual exclamations of the animated adventurer. We swapped emails with the Cuban-American actress and asked. "Whats up? ¿Que onda?"

What other voices can you do?

Well, I love British accents and I can do British accents really well. I can also do Australian, Irish and Scottish accents. On Dora, I've done some additional voices for other characters... I've played a mermaid, I also played a baby, and on Dora's cousin's show, "Go, Diego, Go!" I've voiced a bunch of little Puffin Penguins on one of the upcoming episodes.

Where do you want to go to college?

I still have a few years before I have to seriously think about college... but my first love is playing the piano and composing music. I hope to attend Julliard or Berklee School of Music to continue my music studies.

Are you making mad money?

Well, as far as money goes, my money goes to saving for my future. I'm a simple girl, not into a lot of foo-foo stuff or bling-bling. As long as I have my iPod and some good headphones, I'm happy. Like any teenager, I have an allowance... (I usually spend it very wisely. I use it to bribe my little brother and sister into cleaning my messy room.) Money well-spent!

Do you get recognized on the street?

I do get recognized sometimes because people have seen me on TV, newscasts and in magazines. I'm always ready to say hello to a little girl in my Dora voice when I meet them. It's amazing that I grew up watching "Dora the Explorer" and now I get to be her and continue to bring joy to younger generations of kids around the world.

How did you get into voice acting? Do you want to get into regular acting?

I started out doing on-camera acting including commercials, promotional spots and television shows. I also had done radio commercials and voiceover auditions. So voiceover acting was a natural progression in my career. I'm very comfortable in the vocal booth, acting out scripts and trying to bring life and energy to the character. Voiceover acting is not much different than on-camera or stage acting, except for not having an immediate audience like you do in theatre; it still requires all of the skills that is the craft of acting.

What's your favorite cartoon other than Dora?

I'm a big fan of "Jimmy Neutron", I always have episodes on my DVR recorded. I love the show because it's so smart and funny. I've also been known to catch a few episodes of the "Smurfs," they're so smurfy. I love 'em.
