Paulina Rubio "Ananda"

Paulina is going soft on us. With her new Spanish-language album Ananda, la chica dorada appears to be saying "No quiero ser la Paris Hilton Region 4." You'll find no tequila party songs on this, her fourth U.S. release. Instead, Ananda – which means "bliss" in Sanskrit – is more for sitting than for dancing, even though it's still charged with electric guitars and sharp beats.

The lead track, "Ni Una Sola Palabra", is puro pop en español while the Juanes-penned song "No Te Cambio" comes closest – although not very – to a Latin dance track. The rest of the album is mostly slick, pop rock. Not surprising since the album's contributors include Julieta Venegas, who writes about bitter love on "Que Me Voy a Quedar" and Aureo Baqueiro (Sin Bandera, Alejandro Fernandez) with whom Paulina co-wrote the fizzy sing-along "Lo Que Pensamos."

Though the lyrics may belong to others, the attitude on Ananda is entirely Paulina's affair. The fact that this is not an English-language follow-up to 2002's Border Girl means it is destined to end up almost exclusively in the hands of her old-time fans. To them, she offers a glimpse of Pau after a "first kiss," even if that kiss is always on-screen.
