- Mexico's Roman Catholic church is drawing criticism for an online article published by Reverend Sergio G. Roman warning women not to wear revealing clothing because it could lead to violence: "When we show our body without prudence, without modesty, we are prostituting ourselves." Writer and journalist Guadalupe Loaeza: "It gives rapists permission to say, 'Well, she had on a miniskirt.'"
- U.S. Olympian Henry Cejudo defeated Japan's Tomohiro Matsunaga to win the gold medal in 55kg wrestling. The Mexican-American grappler says his mother "almost did a back flip when she was on the phone."

- Peru declared a state of emergency after indigenous groups occupied oil installations and a hydroelectric plant in protest of a law which they say makes it easier for energy companies to purchase their resource-rich land.
- The California Supreme Court has ruled that doctors are not allowed to discriminate against gay patients on the basis of religious beliefs. The ruling comes after two Christian doctors refused to artificially inseminate 36-year-old Guadalupe Benitez – a lesbian – who was undergoing fertility treatments.
