- One day after admitting U.S. consumers and gun laws are partly to blame for drug trafficking violence in México, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she is considering a ban on military-style assault weapons in the U.S.: "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

- Nearly 50 members of a Oaxacan Indian family were arrested in Los Angeles after police discovered they had allegedly been smuggling heroin from México to the U.S. for two decades. The family reportedly made close to $2 million a month in sales.

- The state of New York is easing its drug laws by moving away from mandatory minimum prison sentences and allowing judges to sentence first-time nonviolent offenders to treatment programs instead. Over the long term, sending drug offenders to treatment is believed to be less expensive than keeping them in jail.
- In an online town hall meeting, President Obama said legalizing marijuana is "not a good strategy to help grow the economy."
