- The U.S. House of Representatives has defeated the bill that would delay the national digital TV transition to June 12. The DTV transition will continue as scheduled on February 17 unless a new vote takes place in the coming weeks.

- Starbucks announced it will slash an estimated 6,000 jobs by closing 300 stores around the globe in addition to 200 stores already scheduled for shutdown in U.S. The coffee giant's profits are down by nearly 70 percent.
- In a sign of thawing relations, President Raul Castro has arrived in Moscow to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. It is the first time a Cuban leader visits Russia in 20 years.
- The U.S.-México border fence is close to completion, with only 69 miles of construction left to meet the 670-mile goal set by the Bush Administration. Last month, President Barack Obama said he needed to review border security operations before deciding on building additional sections to the fence.
