- The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that will delay the digital TV conversion from February 17 to June 12. An estimated 6.5 million Americans are unprepared for the transition. Emergency responders will have to wait another four months before they can use the analog airwaves that would have been freed up by the move to digital.
- The college financial aid system is "in crisis," according to the head of the American Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers. Barmak Nassirian: "Every one of the participants in the system is experiencing hardship — higher education institutions, states, aid donors and families all are cash-strapped."
- The Cool Kids clean up some dirty laundry in a new video, "Pennies."
- Bolivian voters have approved a new constitution that will allow Evo Morales to run for a second consecutive term. The charter also gives indigenous group more power in negotiations over Bolivia's natural resources.
- Rising temperatures and droughts caused by global warming are causing trees in the West to die twice as fast as they used to, according to a study by the United States Geological Survey.
- Mexican police say they have arrested El Pozolero (the Stew Maker), a man who dissolved 300 people in acid while working for drug cartels. Santiago Meza López says he was paid $600 a week for his efforts.
