Three weeks ago, nearly a thousand punks and metal heads took over the Plaza de Armas in Querétaro, central México, to rid the park of "emos." Outnumbered, the mob's victims could do little but huddle together and try to absorb the punches and taunts. Only a few days later, a similar confrontation took place a hundred miles away in Mexico City.
Mexicans, long accustomed to disturbing news of violent crime, were shocked by television coverage of the mass violence. Over the last few years, emo, a fashion and music style defined by androgynous make-up, angular haircuts, tight clothes and a pop-punk sound, has become popular with teens throughout México largely due to the spread of MySpace and the global appeal of such bands as My Chemical Romance and Dashboard Confessional. The wave has lifted Mexican groups like Pxndx (Panda), Insite and Avella Ink into the spotlight. But not everyone in this often traditional and sometimes machista society is keen on this gender and genre bending youth movement.
News reports cite homophobia as a likely factor in the attacks. Many anti-emo videos, blogs and bulletins contain slogans like "Movimiento Anti Emosexual" and "Emo is gay."
Some have blamed Telehit VJ Kristoff for provoking anti-emo sentiment with angry rants and emo-bashing sketches. (Telehit is owned by the powerful Mexican broadcaster Televisa.) After the attacks, Kristoff responded: "I may not agree with the emo philosophy, but I would die to defend their right to express themselves."
Last weekend, demonstrations were held in Mexico City and Tijuana in solidarity with the victims of the violent attacks, but tensions remain high. Few are certain as to what sparked the violence and whether there is yet more to come.

I dont really care about it untill it gets to the point to where they are cutting themselvs and doing stuff that they talk about in songs and TV like being lonely and "hating the world". there's nuthing wrong with the style tho

Kristoff is a punk I saw a clip of what he said and he shouldn't have said it the way he did or said anything at all....I understand he was givin his opinion on it but he still should have thought of what he was saying before he did...I'm not saying is all his fault or he has something to do with it...but if I know I'm on tv and viewed by 100s people, I would have kept my mouth shut...some how his opinion did help those punk take the actions they did, even though what he said happend about 3 months ago...n then he came out saying he would "die to defend their right to express themselves."
Emo are as much as human as that preppy boy that wear pink all the time, that gothic girl that looks pail all the time, or that gang memeber that walk around lik he got something up his butt...they have feeling, walk with 2 feet, have 2 eyes...they are HUMANS!!....they express them self different way, see the world in different ways...but who really see the world the way it truly is??....n "normal ppl" (if you can call them that), dont see emo the way it really is. Some say emo are kids that cut them self, burn them self, depressed all the time..typical things...but really that is not the way it is...I know emo kids and I don't see them cutting them self, don't burn them self...nor do they think bout killing them self...and there are many emo lik that...they lik to have fun, fool around, BE WHO WE ARE!!...plus there could be some other chick cuting her self and she might not be emo....and I, personally, believe that some of the emo videos are made by ppl that a: are emo n just lik to fool around cuz they have a sense of humor lik everyone eles, or b:that really have nothing to do with their boring life but make fun of people that are not afraid to express them self and be who they are.
and those kids that be say "emo is gay, get a life"...dude are u real seriuos??...they have a life they being them self while u are over there criticizing them, wasiting ur time...now tell me who need to get a life???
Emo kids keep fight for ya'll right, be stronge n kept them heads up. Don't let no fool keep u down...which I'm sure u guys won't

(sigh...) It's hard for me to admit this, but the world is getting worse and worse each day...
Eventually all the happiness will be gone and we'll be living in hell on earth... :(

emo ppl just express themselves in a DIFFERENT WAY THAN OTHERS! and that doesnt give anybody the right to treat them differently! yes many emos hate "reguetoneros" and i dont blame them cuz reguetton sux ass! i am emo myself and i will not change myself just because society doesnt like it! i am myself and if u dont like it, stick a d!@# up your mouth to keep it busy and stop talking!

Look Emo is a style and a big movement in music ..... i love emo music as much as i love reggaeton .... dancehall ... cumbia... & so on... let's jus say im a music junky ... well anyways the main point is that music is a form of expression no matter what beat it has & i believe people have no right saying what's "music" or "trash" i mean if you don't like what you hear just DON'T hear it ... & i mean kids are kids & what you wear is what you wear because i mean just because you might look a certain way doesn't mean it reflect your whole personalty .... come on people ...... THINK!!!! before you critize and plus that bull that happen in mexico is just a shame & disrespecting a genre on national TV is just plain disgusting........
