after the GF said they werent hers, he should have said that last night or recently he lent his car out to a friend while his was in the shop. his friend dropped the car off the next morning, and he doesnt know his friend did that night, and they probably belong to his girlfriend. then he should apologize for it and say that he's going to have to talk with his friend to clear everything up.
